Before the main climbing season, we asked ourselves: how to create a well-considered, safe, and high-quality equipment set for alpinists?

What are the needs of a climber venturing into steep walls and unmarked terrain?

  • Shoes must be robust with proper ankle support (mid-height or low-cut), featuring precise toe boxes for easier smearing. A waterproof membrane keeps feet dry when crossing snowfields or streams. The sole rubber should be Vibram or a hybrid climbing/hiking compound.

  • Helmets can be ultralight or traditional – each has advantages, and remember: every gram counts.

  • Protection can be traditional cams/nuts or ultralight options.

  • Carabiners (quickdraws)

  • Climbing shoes should balance comfort with precision.

  • Pants need durability with reinforced high-wear areas, a snug fit, and slightly higher back waistbands.

  • Extended quickdraws are essential for climbing to reduce rope drag.

  • Ropes: Single (9.0-9.4mm) or half/double ropes.

  • Backpacks (~30L max) suffice for 1-2 day climbs.

  • Bivy sack

  • Water bottle

Don’t forget: First aid kit, hammer, route topo, sunscreen, and a charged phone.
